How to make a roping saddle

It is for a specific function only that a roping saddle is created. Making a cutting saddle into a roping saddle can be considered as a heroic attempt. The tree is the strongest as well as basic part of the saddle which is mainly altered to make the roping saddle. A solid wood piece is usually covered well with rawhide to create the Western saddle tree. In the conversion process, the material has to be subtracted from the strength of the saddle, from its two parts that is the cantle as well as the fork.

The third part that is the horn also needs to be reinforced well which may not always provide satisfactory results. Rather than getting it removed, you may have to even add material to it instead, even after which you may not get a horn that is strong enough for the purpose of roping. A number of things are needed to make cutting saddle into a roping saddle. Strips of wood, sandpaper, wood glue, raw hide, tools to do the leather work like thread, knife and needle as well as tools for woodworking like a plane, mallet, rasp and chisel are the other tools required to make the roping saddle.

Getting down to basics

The conversion process starts by first getting the saddle disassembled until you get raw hide covered tree that is completely isolated. Next soak the tree in water until you get a softened rawhide. Once it soaks well, remove it. Undercut fork swells of the cutting configuration have to be reduced with the help of woodworking tools. The rider’s legs or the action of the rope will not be interfered with by adopting this process. To facilitate a quick dismount for the rider, the undercut fork swells can be taken all the way downward, to the slick fork, rather than team roping. This can be done best for calf roping or steer dogging for use of saddles in competitions.

Height of the cantle also has to be evaluated which you can leave high for greater support in team roping. It can be taken down for calf roping or dogging. Next carve the wood pieces and fit them around the horn of the cutting saddle that is tall and thin to improve the strength against the shock of stopping the animal that has been roped. Glue the wood pieces well till smooth and dry. The converted saddle tree can then be re-covered with raw hide.

The last process includes restoration and recreating the saddle’s leatherwork. All the accessories have to be reattached and now the roping saddle is ready from the cut saddle. To maintain proper discipline in the case of both, the animal as well as the rider, the saddle needs to have specific qualities. It is very important to understand the characteristics of every saddle style to meet various functionalities while riding the animal. Remember to fit the saddle well onto the mount. The rider could get injured when handling an unpleasant horse so make sure the saddle is fitted well.
